Cableway

Milan Cableway

Up until 1929 Milan was a city based on the water and many canals used to flow into the city providing materials and goods. Starting from 1850, unfortunately, the hygienic conditions of these canals were unbearable for the city, so they have been buried after many years. In recent years though, after the hygienic conditions have been highly improved, the idea of reopening those old canals is very appealing to the improvement of the quality of life.

MANY PROPOSALS HAVE BEEN ALREADY MADE PUBLIC AND THE MAJORITY OF THE POPULATION AGREES TO REOPEN THE CANALS, "I NAVIGLI".

The new canals would follow the course of the old one, going around the city where today are present some of the more trafficked roads in the city. This would create a peaceful and relaxing pedestrian road.

HERE BELOW WE CAN SEE THE COURSE OF THE OLD CANALS THAT MAY BE REOPEN IN MILAN.

I decided then to design a cableway that follows these canals. The idea was to create a really simple shape that intersects with circles. The cableway would have an incorporated wi-fi to create a connected and smart city. The exterior is characterized by an orange stripe which is the iconic colour of the Milan Transportation Service.

THE INTERIOR OF THE CABLEWAY IS AS SIMPLE AS THE EXTERIORS GIVING PRIORITY TO SPACE AND VISIBILITY. IN FACT, ALL THE CABIN IS SURROUNDED BY A BIG GLASS AND THE ABSENCE OF A DRIVER ALLOW THE PASSENGERS TO HAVE A NICE VIEW TO ALL THE MONUMENTS SURROUNDING THE CANALS.

FINALLY, THE SEATS ARE CREATED BY AN EXTRUDED RECTANGLES THAT CAN FOLD IF NEEDED TO CREATE MORE SPACE AND IT CONNECTS WITH THE ORANGE LINE THAT GOES AROUND THE CABIN.
